A few months before I left on my vacation to Mexico, I decided that I would try to learn a little bit of Spanish. My goal was to learn just enough Spanish to be able to get around and converse a little bit with the locals.
So I enrolled in Discover Spanish. I took 3 lessons a week for 12 weeks. When I arrived in Mexico, I was able to speak the language! It was fun. If I needed to order in a restaurant, ask someone for directions, or check into a hotel, I could do it. The best part was being able to talk with the people in their language and makes friends. The people of Mexico are some of the nicest and most polite people I've ever met.
I'm getting ready to work as a volunteer tax preparer for Hispanic taxpayers and I want to refresh my high school Spanish. I'm an IRS employee and we need more Spanish speaking employees.
This is my Success Story and it keeps getting better!
I tutor several Hispanic elementary students from an Austin, Tx school. Although they all speak broken English and are enrolled in English as a second language, I'm finding it helpful to be able to speak Spanish with them.
I can honestly say that Discover Spanish has been the link to my success with these students. By knowing Spanish and speaking Spanish with these kids, I am able to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. They really enjoy reversing roles and being able to teach me things too. At the end of my tutoring sessions we spend some time online with the DS program and they just love doing the lessons with me. We have many good laughs over my mistakes. I keep trying and by my example provide them with a model for success. This exchange has allowed us to become great friends and build a supportive bond.
Discover Spanish has given me the tools to relate to these students on a level that would never have happened otherwise. Thank you for such an amazing tutorial!!
I used Discover Spanish to bone up on my Spanish before taking a trip to Mexico... it worked! I could communicate in most situations! Thanks Johnny!
I am heading to Mexico for the second time in two summers, as one of the leaders to a youth mission trip. We always have someone who is fluent with us, but I want to be a more active participant. I'm looking forward to expanding my limited Spanish speaking and be able to communicate on many levels, even in the Mayan village, where many of the kids are learning spanish as much as they speak in their native language.
